I began my artistic career almost 50 years ago in Washington, DC. I first studied under Dean Stambaugh, an American landscape luminist artist who exhibited in Corcoran shows and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
I graduated cum laude from Dartmouth College, earning a bachelor's degree in Visual Studies. I was awarded the Adelbert Ames Fine Art Award for a combination of success in studio work and art history. I studied painting under Esme Thompson and wood sculpture under Fumio Yoshimura. I later studied watercolor at the Art Students League in New York City.
My recent work blends a traditional training in landscape painting, portraiture and collage with cubist influence and abstract expressionism. Patricia Qualls, a contemporary abstract expressionist, is an essential guide and mentor for my work.
I began my formal training in pastel and oil. I studied wood sculpture in my 20's, but found the need for industrial tools for furniture-quality joinery too imposing for a small studio. I studied watercolor at the Art Students League, and will sketch with that medium on travels.
Today, I work mostly with a broad range of acrylics that allow for deep color, blending, texture, brighter finishes, and less toxicity for me and the environment.
The publishing of my work online is a tribute to my mother. She was a talented artist, and this is a scene of rainy Paris in the 1930s that she painted as a young teenager. She did not have the opportunity nor courage to express herself as a painter fully. That missed opportunity is a driving force behind my desire to expose my creativity to the world.
I am now fortunate to split time between Woodside, California and Cameron, Montana. My representational and abstract work is inspired by a love of nature and the pleasures of life outdoors. I endeavor to capture the energy of the majestic West Coast, the golden hills of California, the rugged beauty of Madison County, Montana, and the wonders of the Yellowstone region.
My work is represented by Patricia Qualls' studio and gallery in Carmel, California. If you have an interest in collecting my work, please contact her studio.
